What is Indian Penal Code

Indian Penal code 1860 is enshrined with list of punishments for various offenses done by the criminals. The word crime is no where mentioned in the Indian Penal Code 1860 but it literally means something that is anti social and is not acceptable by the laws of a land. Those who violate the laws of a land and acts with no conscience and with no consciousness about the consequences must be punished. To punish such offenders, Indian Penal Code provides the punishments.



What are the contents of the Indian Penal Code 1860


The Indian Penal Code contains the punishments to be awarded to the offenders. It has sections divided into chapters and they are 23 in numbers. Here under is the brief mention of chapters of Indian Penal Code 1860.

Chapter 1 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with Introduction to the code and its extent.

Chapter 2 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with explanations about various vocabularies.

Chapter 3 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with types of punishments in Indian Penal Code.

Chapter 4 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with general exceptions.

Chapter 5 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with punishments for abetment

Chapter 5A of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with punishments for conspiracies of criminal nature

Chapter 6 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with punishments for offences against the state

Chapter 16 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with punishments for offences affecting the human body such as offences affecting life, offences causing miscarriage, offences of injuries to unborn, offences of wrongful restraint and confinement, offenses of kidnapping, offences of abduction, offences of forced labor, sexual offences and offences which are unnatural.

Chapter 17 of Indian Penal Code 1860 deals with punishments for offences against property. That includes offences of theft, offences of extortion, offences of robbery and dacoity, offences of receiving of the property that was stolen, offences of cheating, offences of mischief and offences of trespass which of criminal in nature.
